Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s royal wedding was all about joy and celebration. Yet, many hearts silently ached, missing the late ruler of hearts and the groom’s mother, Princess Diana, on the special occasion. The couple made sure they included her on their big day.
Princess Diana passed away in a tragic car crash on August 31,1997. The People’s Princess was only 36 years old at the time. Nobody could have missed her more than her son, Prince Harry, on his wedding day; he teared up more than once, remembering his mother during the wedding ceremony.
Here is how the bride and groom honored the late Princess Diana in their own subtle yet heartwarming ways.
1. Meghan’s engagement ring had diamonds from Princess Diana’s personal collection
Prince Harry himself designed the engagement ring, choosing two diamonds from Diana’s collection. He told BBC he did so ‘to make sure that she’s with us on this crazy journey together’. Meghan added, “It’s so important to me to know that she’s a part of this with us.”
The two diamonds were placed on either side of a stone from Botswana. The ring was custom made by Cleave and Company.
2. They honored the causes that meant the most to Diana
Princess Diana earned her titles – ‘The People’s Princess’ and ‘Ruler of Hearts’ – due to her noble spirit and philanthropy. Prince Harry and Meghan kept her legacy alive by asking their well wishers to make donations in the names of the charities that they provided instead of sending them wedding gifts. Two of those charities are Children’s HIV Association and Crisis, an NGO working to eradicate homelessness.
3. Princess Diana’s sister gave a speech at the wedding ceremony
Lady Jane Fellows, Diana’s elder sister, was not only present at the wedding ceremony but also gave a speech. She read The Song of Solomon. Kensington Palace had announced earlier in a statement, “Harry and Ms. Markle feel honoured that Lady Jane will be representing her family and helping to celebrate the memory of the late Princess of the wedding day.”

4. Her other two siblings were also present at the ceremony
Diana’s elder brother, Charles Spencer, and sister, Lady Sarah McCorquodale, were also present on the special occasion. Also in attendance was Kitty Spencer, Lady Diana’s niece, and many commented on how much she looks like the late Princess herself.
5. The floral decor held meaning
The floral decoration done with white garden roses was rather special; Princess Diana loved these flowers. The roses also grow in the Kensington Palace’s White Garden, which was planted to honor her. After the wedding was over, the couple arranged to have the flowers made into bouquets and sent to hospice patients in London.
6. Meghan’s bouquet included Diana’s favorite flowers, handpicked by Prince Harry
The bouquet that Meghan was carrying had Diana’s favorite flowers, Forget-Me-Nots, handpicked by Prince Harry. The couple specifically chose them to honor the memory of the late Princess.
7. Diana’s wedding vows were reflected in Meghan’s own vows
Diana made headlines after her own wedding when she vowed to love, care and honor Prince Charles, but not to ‘obey’ him, as was traditional for Royal weddings. Meghan Markle, a feminist herself, did the same for Prince Harry. She lovingly recited her vows after the priest, and viewers were quick to notice she had omitted the part about obeying her husband.
8. One of the hymns at the ceremony was also played at Diana’s funeral
The Welsh hymn, ‘Guide Me, O Thy Great Redeemer’, was played at Diana’s funeral as well as Prince Harry’s wedding.
9. Meghan wore Diana’s aquamarine ring to the reception
Along with her elegant white dress, Meghan wore her mother in law’s beautiful aquamarine ring on her right hand to her wedding reception at Frogmore House. The ring was a gift to Meghan, from Prince Harry. Diana wore the ring a few months before her death.
Princess Diana was certainly remembered on her son’s big day, as the entire world appreciate the tributes.
