A 38-year-old father has been charged with attempted murder after he threw his 1-year-old daughter off the roof in South Africa.

A South African man threatened to throw his terrified child off the roof in an attempt to protest against the demolishment of his illegal shack. The incident took place in Kwadwesi, near Port Elizabeth on the eastern cape coast of South Africa.

A brave policeman tried to negotiate with the father as he held his baby daughter from her ankles and dangled her while she screamed. The little girl swung over the edge of the roof, while other protestors in town chanted, ‘throw, throw, throw’.

Upon hearing this, the police negotiator warned his team that the father was about to throw his child off the roof. Fortunately, the child was saved by policemen who were standing below the shack when the father threw his infant off the roof.

The South African police service were sent to the township in Kwadwesi to make sure that the demolishment of 90 illegal shacks were done rightfully. The frightful incident took place when 150 protesters started rioting, throwing things and burning tyres.

Although the police officials successfully calmed everyone, that was when the father climbed his shack and threatened to throw his daughter off the roof.

Police spokesman, Captain Andre Beetge, explained the case and stated, “At about 10.40am a 38-year-old man climbed onto the roof of one of the structures and held a one-year-old girl in his hands. This was done to force the team not to demolish the structure,” said police Captain Andre Beetge.

“The 38-year-old father has been charged with the attempted murder of his daughter and the case is being handled by the Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences unit.”

In light of this event, the Motherwell Cluster Commander, Major General Dawie Rabie, praised the efforts of the brave police force. He stated, “It is shocking that a father would attempt to sacrifice his own child for the sake of delaying the demolishing of an illegal shack structure but thankfully the girl was saved.”

The toddler has now been handed to her mother with full custody, and local services have also ensured the safety of both mother and child.
