A horrified young woman turned her new husband in to the police after finding out that he had been filming customers in the toilet of the KFC where he worked.
21-year-old Mollie Clarke had been in a relationship with Richard Cooper for four years but was married for just 100 days when she checked his phone while it was charging in the kitchen. She thought he was cheating on her and wanted to see if she could find out any proof. Instead of discovering the details of an affair, she came across several videos her husband had filmed. These videos showed young women and children in the KFC toilet where he worked.
Horrified, she immediately turned him in.
Cooper pleaded guilty to four charges of voyeurism and admitted to the police that he had been recording the customers and even one of his own colleagues at his place of work. He later used the videos for sexual gratification. While on trial in Antrim Crown Court earlier this month, he explained how he concealed his phone in a black bin in the toilet at different times during December 2016 and January 2017.
He had videos of a teenage girl, a young child, a mother changing a child’s nappy, and one of his own colleagues. The police informed all victims of how their privacy had been invaded.
Clarke explained the situation saying, “He’d just came home from doing some gardening work. He asked me to get my parents to lend him £500. ‘I asked him why, and he wouldn’t tell me. Then he got up, put his phone on the charger, told me to not look through it before walking out. It had a pass lock on it but I managed to guess it. I still don’t know why but I went straight to his videos. Anyone else would have went for messages, but something told me check there.”
She explained the kind of videos she saw and her reaction to them in detail, saying, “The first video I saw was of a child going to the toilet. I just threw the phone down in shock. I actually rang his mother, who I was close to at that time and she told me to stay there and not to do anything. I hung up and looked again at his phone and I could see about four more films. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. You could see him setting up the video, his face as clear as ever, trying different angles. Within about 20 minutes I was in the car with my sister and going to the police station with his phone in my hand.”
Clarke discovered in court that he had also made videos of her using the toilet. According to Daily Mail, she said, “I realize now the man I thought I was married to didn’t exist. I didn’t know him. He was a liar who lived a double life, like Jekylla and Hyde, and I hope I’ll never see him again.”
Cooper was fired from KFC and walked away from court with a two-year probation order and a five year Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO). His ex-wife says she believes he got off too lightly, given that he was engaging in child pornography.
She wrote on her Facebook profile, “Richard Coopers sentencing today, 2 years probation. This is a man who took videos of me his own wife using the toilet, employs of kfc using the toilet, videos of a 18 month old getting changed, videos of a 5 and 6 year old using the toilet and a 14 year old using the toilet. He is now allowed to enter Coleraine again, he’s been classed as high risk sexual deviant. Where is the justice here? Over a year of courts and he’s going to walk like a free man.”
The couple had been together for a long time. They were dating for three years when Clarke moved in with him at the age of 17. At the time, she was going through chemotherapy for Hodgkin Lymphoma. She said he supported her throughout her treatment, and even when she hit a low point after finding out she couldn’t have kids. The couple were later shocked to discover that Clarke was pregnant.
They had their first daughter in 2015 and the second one in 2016. They also got married that year, just months before she discovered the videos.
