Denmark finally passed the highly debated and controversial law against full-face coverings on August 1 and proceeded to take complete legal action against those violated the law.
This caused anger and outrage among Muslim women living across the country and, consequently, they came on roads to peacefully protest against the veil ban. However, amidst the police arrests and the protests, one picture that captured the human sentiment at its rawest was a niqab-clad woman hugging a female police officer.
The protests were a result of the veil ban and the incident that happened immediately after. Earlier this week, on Wednesday, the legislation full came into effect, it imposes a fine of 1,000 kroner (£119) on anyone wearing garments that hide the face. However, this was deemed as unfair and unjust to Muslim woman living in Denmark. Hence, they decided to peacefully protest against the veil ban.
Amidst the protest, the pictures and videos of an on-duty police officer hugging a veiled Muslim woman started going viral all across the inter-webs. Many declared the picture as one of the rawest representation of human emotions; despite being the one having the authority, i.e. the police officer, and the one peacefully protesting, human connection disregarded all binaries and barriers of power, dissent and religion between the two people. They were seen hugging each other in solidarity and support.
The protests also took place because of an incident that happened at the shopping mall on the same day the legislation was passed: a woman tried to tear off another woman’s niqab from her face. Police were called to the shopping mall in Horsholm, north of Copenhagen, where the incident took place.
Police took a photograph of the woman wearing the niqab, and obtained security camera footage of the incident from the shopping center. The woman was told she would receive a fine of 1,000 kroner (Dh570) in the post, and was told to either remove her veil or leave the public space.
