Andy Spade, Kate Spade’s husband and business partner, has reported that she had suffered from chronic depression and anxiety for many years.
In a statement released to New York Times on Wednesday, Andy spoke publicly about Kate for the first time after her death. He announced that for the last five years leading up to her death, the fashion designer was ‘actively seeking help and working closely with her doctors to treat her disease’.
He said, “[she was] seeing a doctor on a regular basis and taking medication for both depression and anxiety.”
Andy admitted, however, that there was no indication or warning that his wife was contemplating suicide. He said, “It was a complete shock. And it clearly wasn’t her. There were personal demons she was battling.”
Previously, Kate Spade’s sister had claimed the suicide was not a surprise, and had asserted that Kate was suffering from Bipolar Disorder.
Andy also said that the note left by his wife was never seen by him, his daughter or anyone else in the family. The note, in which Kate told her daughter it wasn’t her fault, was first seen on the news. He said, “I am appalled that a private message to my daughter has been so heartlessly shared with the media.”
Law enforcement agencies found the 55-year-old designer and mother of a 13-year-old daughter dead on Tuesday morning in the bedroom of her Park Avenue apartment.
Andy, the brother of comedian David Spade, claimed that he was ‘in touch with her the night before’ and that she ‘sounded happy’.
Having been with Kate for 35 years, Andy claimed that there was no proof of substance or alcohol abuse while they were together. There were no problems with the business, either.
Even though he and his wife had been separated for ten months, he said that they lived only a few blocks from each other. The two saw and spoke to each other every day. Their daughter, Bea, would live with both of them on different days. Andy also revealed that they were never legally separated or even discussed the idea of getting divorced.
The 55-year-old American entrepreneur said that the only important thing to him now was to take care of his daughter, Bea, and to make her his top priority. He said, “My main concern is Bea and protecting her privacy as she deals with the unimaginable grief of losing her mother.”
In 1993, the iconic fashion designer established her company in partnership with her husband in their apartment. Just before starting her own company, she was working for Mademoiselle magazine as an accessories editor.
