Prince Harry and Meghan Markle exchange their wedding vows, holding hands and smiling at each other

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stood before 600 guests at St. George’s Chapel today, May 19, holding hands and smiling at each other, as they said their loving vows.

“The vows you are about to take are to be made in the presence of God,” the priest said. When asked, as part of tradition, to declare any possible legal reasons for them to not marry, the two looked at each other and laughed!

Harry and Meghan did not write their own vows. The two repeated their vows after the priest, as has been the tradition with past royal brides and grooms, and then put rings on each other’s fingers.

Harry recited:

“I Harry, take you, Meghan, to be my wife, to have and to hold from this day forward,
for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death us do part – according to God’s holy law.
In the presence of God I make this vow.”

Meghan repeated the same vows with her hands in Harry’s:

“I Meghan, take you, Harry, to be my husband, to have and to hold from this day forward,
for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death us do part -according to God’s holy law.
In the presence of God I make this vow.”

It must be noted that the Royal Vows have changed since past Royal Weddings; past brides like Kate Middleton and Princess Diana were made to vow that they would ‘obey’ their husbands. This part has now been omitted, in an attempt to make royal weddings – and marriages – more progressive and feminist.

The vows were followed by prayers, blessings, and then the final hymn. Prince Harry and his new wife, Meghan Markle, then walked out to prepare for their procession through Windsor. The newly married couple will soon greet thousands who have gathered to witness their big day and to congratulate them.
