26-year-old reality TV star Lyric McHenry was found dead on Tuesday on a sidewalk in the Bronx. She was 20 weeks pregnant at the time. More details have now been discovered.
Here’s a refresher on the situation before we launch into the newest details:
1. Police Statement
A statement obtained by CNN from the New York Police Department on August 14 says:
“A 26-year-old woman was found early Tuesday morning unconscious and unresponsive, lying on the sidewalk in the vicinity of Undercliff Avenue and Boscobel Place, within the confines of the 44 Precinct.”
The report also said that there were ‘no obvious signs of trauma observed’, adding, “EMS responded to the location and transported the aided female to Bronx Lebanon Hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.”
2. Drugs may have been a cause of death
The New York Times said that she was found partly clothed in just a pajama top and her underwear, with a bag of cocaine near her. Drugs were later determined to be the reason for her death.
3. She was partying the night she died
Hours before she was found, her Instagram story showed her partying at several places in New York City, including the Frederick Hotel, the SoHo Grand and Dream Downtown in lower Manhattan. The star turned 26 on August 6 and was celebrating with her friends.
4. Foul Play Involved?
The family of the victim believes that there was foul play involved in her death, and told Daily Mail that they believe she died somewhere else and was dumped in the Bronx where she was found. They also said that while they knew she was pregnant, they had never heard of cocaine use from her before.
Ardis Irvine, a neighbour of McHenry’s mother said, “She didn’t die at the place they found her. She didn’t live in the Bronx, though she lived in New York. Her knees were all scraped up, so either she was dumped there or she crawled trying to get out of that area and then she passed out.”
5. Education and Career
McHenry, a graduate of Stanford University, appeared on E! Entertainment‘s Rich Kids of Beverly Hills and then on Magic Johnson’s show EJNYC. She also produced the reality program charting Johnson’s life, which lasted only one season. She also volunteered as a fundraiser for former President Obama’s campaigns.
6. Friendship with Magic Johnson
Magic Johnson wished her a happy birthday on Instagram as well, writing, “Happy birthday to my best friend who has strutted with my in princess gowns since day 1 @lyric_leigh words cannot express how much I love and appreciate you in my life.”
He added, “Your constant love, respect and companionship gives me the confidence to live my truth every single day and I am so blessed that even as baby divas we recognized the greatness in each other. I love you #leoseason #teamthis.”
7. Her mother
McHenry’s mother, Jennifer, also wished her, writing, “Happy 26 years my beautiful princess Lyric Leigh. I love you more than any words or gifts can express! You have been one of the greatest gifts in my life and Our journey together as mommy and daughter has fulfilled and blessed me abundantly! I adore you beautiful brilliant “pinta”.”
8. Family Statement
McHenry’s family said in a statement that she “was a brilliant, creative and lovely young woman who shared a deep passion for writing, film and a long-standing commitment to social justice.” They also thanked fans for their support and said that the cause of her death had not been determined so far.
They said, “The McHenry Family deeply appreciates the many communications of support from Lyric McHenry’s many friends upon learning of her untimely death at approximately 6:00 a.m. the morning of August 14th, 2018. Despite the speculation in earlier reports, at this point in time the cause of Lyric’s death has yet to be determined.”
McHenry’s funeral took place at the start of September. Magic Johnson wrote about the incident, “Yesterday was a difficult day as we laid to rest Lyric McHenry, a daughter to Cookie and I and best friend to EJ.”
He added, “We’ve known Lyric since she was a baby and shared many lifelong memories with her and her family.”
A 29 year old man named Alexis Meija-Ramirez was charged with concealment of a human corpse and tampering with physical evidence.
The complaint states that early on August 14, Ramirez and “two other male individuals” placed McHenry’s body above the Major Deegan Expressway in the Bronx.
Ramirez was arrested for these charges and he is currently out on bail.
McHenry’s family has not commented on this update yet.
