23-year-old Casey Lawhorn was found dead of what seemed like a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Monday. This was a day after he wrote a Facebook post that chillingly detailed how he had killed his mother and a close friend.
The young man was found on Monday in Mississippi, where he was on the run after he was ‘wanted’ as a double homicide suspect, according to authorities. His abandoned car was found on Sunday on the side of a highway in Jasper County, Mississippi.
Lawhorn had already confessed to the police by the time they got to him; on Sunday, he called 911 in Tennessee and confessed to the double murder, East Ridge Police Assistant Police Chief, Stan Allen, told Buzzfeed News. He told the police he was going to kill himself, and then directed the officers to where the crimes had taken place.
When the police arrived at the East Ridge house, they found the dead bodies of Lawhorn’s 54-year-old mother, Vi, and his 22-year-old friend, Avery. Both had died from what appeared to be gunshot wounds.
Lawhorn then wrote a chilling Facebook post, describing the murder. He also mentioned he wrote it while sitting on the side of the I-59 in Mississippi after his car broke down.
According to the post, Avery Gaines was staying over at Lawhorn’s house and had fallen asleep on the living room floor. Lawhorn described how he died as soon as he was shot. He then detailed going to his mother’s room and attempting to shoot her while she was drunk, but his gun jammed. He fixed that, and then fired two bullets. However, he missed hitting vital organs because the room was dark.
He said his mother started screaming louder than he had ever heard or imagined, and asked him why he had tried to kill her. He shot twice more, turning the lights on to ensure accuracy, and then left the room.
He then grabbed the heroin and cash his dead friend had on him, and left the house. He specifically mentioned that he did not hurt the pets in the house.
“I was shaking from the adrenaline, but I felt nothing other than that, except maybe disgust at the corpse in front of me and the noises it was making,” he wrote.
Lawhorn also wrote how suicide was the only remaining option for him. He said he had known he was suicidal forever and that it had gotten worse since he started attending Middle Tennessee State University. He said that now that he was certainly getting life in prison, suicide was a much better option.
“If I would get the death penalty, then I should definitely kill myself, otherwise I’m just wasting tax dollars in lengthy legal processes. Even without being executed, just wasting away in prison sounds awful, and also a horrible use of state money,” he wrote.
He also advised readers against sending wishes for him and his family, saying it wouldn’t help his little brother at all.
“He will probably need a lot of help getting through this, and if you think you are helping him just by talking to the sky, you’re f**king wrong. If you want to help him in this insanely difficult time I’m putting him through, actually do something, don’t just think about it,” he wrote.
Exactly why he shot his family and friends is still unclear.
