A 46-year-old British man was reported by Travelodge after he checked into a hotel room with his 14-year-old daughter. He was mistaken as a pedophile.
The accused man, Karl Pollard, was traveling from his home in South Wales with his daughter, Stephanie, to go see his bed-ridden mother, who was recently diagnosed with lung cancer. Near their destination, the duo booked a double room in a Travelodge in Cheshire.
14-year-old Stephanie and her dad had to share a room due to the lack of availability of more rooms. However, things got suspicious from the moment they entered the lodge; the staff wasn’t entirely convinced about Karl’s intentions. According to him, he was not well received by the receptionist.
“When we arrived the receptionist gave me a weird look but I thought nothing of it,” he told Independent.
However, he decided to shrug it off and went on with his routine, since the two were already tired after a four-hour long train journey.
“We went up to the room to get unpacked and ready to see my mum. It was only a 20-minute walk away – which is why I chose the hotel,” he said.
However, he had not the slightest of clue about what was going to happen next. Someone from the staff at Travelodge misjudged him as a sex offender and called the police on him! The hotel was then raided by the authorities and Karl was branded as a ‘pedophile’.
Karl was taken aback by all of this and didn’t know how to react. According to Daily star, the shaken father said, “I couldn’t believe it. It was an emotional trip already – but it was made so much worse.”
He went on to say, “One minute I was brushing my teeth, the next I was being told I was a pedophile.”
“My mum has just been diagnosed with aggressive lung cancer. We’re not sure how long she has left. I wanted to take Stephanie down to visit her before she started treatment,” the humiliated father explained.
He talked about how his daughter was left traumatized by the incident. She was extremely upset by the authorities’ interrogation, which left her confused and scared.
“My daughter was in tears. She was so scared – and thought I was going to get taken away. This has never happened to me before.”
The hotel, on the other hand, did not even apologize to Karl and Stephanie. They were not provided with a refund and actually had to pay 150 pounds for the stay.
