Egyptian-American Cenderella Nana recently went viral on Facebook after she posted several videos of her ‘divorce party’.
Nana, wearing a white dress, is seen dancing and cutting a cake in the video, which is captioned, “My divorce party, thank God. One of the best days of my life.”
Nana is a US-based Egyptian woman who decided to celebrate the end of her troubled marriage publicly. And while she and her friends had fun at the event, not everyone was happy about it.
Given that she comes from a society that often stigmatizes divorce – and especially divorced women – Nana received mixed reviews on her posts. While some people thought her actions were extremely brave and courageous, others criticized her for celebrating something her culture looks down upon.
In a since-deleted hour-long live video posted on Facebook, Nana explained the condition of her marriage, revealing that she was in an abusive relationship with someone who married her primarily for her US passport; his own work permit had expired and he needed to be able to reside in the US.
She revealed that her ex-husband blackmailed her right before their wedding, when everything had already been planned. At the time, Nana was hospitalized for cancer and was undergoing treatment. He told her he would marry her only if she signed a document that said he would retain his American citizenship even in the instance that the couple gets divorced.
He threatened to stand her up at the wedding if she refused to sign. The knowledge that her whole family was going to be attending the wedding pushed Nana to sign the contract.
She said her husband both physically and verbally abused her before and after they had made it official and signed their wedding contract.
Nana also described a particular incident where her ex-husband pulled her out of the car and threw her on the ground. He then called the police and claimed she was attempting to commit suicide. Due to the incident, Nana was forced to undergo psychiatric evaluation for three days.
All of this was on top of the fact that her ex-husband knew she had previously battled cancer and was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.
She also revealed that the two had tried to make it work and that she personally put in a lot of effort, but the consistent abuse eventually made her realize she couldn’t carry on with the relationship.
She also addressed all the people that commented on her celebratory posts, remanding her for promoting divorce. She explained that she wasn’t promoting divorce, but she also didn’t feel that people should stay in unhappy relationships where one’s safety is compromised and there is no future.
Many are supporting her decision to celebrate the end of her toxic marriage and are congratulating her on her new life!
