Game of Thrones fans can rejoice! George RR Martin just confirmed a prequel set around 12,000 years before Game of Thrones.
HBO officially gave Martin the go ahead for the ambitious project and he has started work on it already. It will be aired in 2019 after Game of Thrones ends its reign on the channel.
Excited fans have been theorizing about what the Game of Thrones prequel will contain. Many of them believe it will be about the first Long Night and the Age of Heroes. However, Martin wrote a blog post in which he discredited this theory. Instead, the prequel will take viewers back to where everything began and will give them the chance to see the world as the First Men saw it all those years ago.
Martin did make it clear that nothing has been set in stone just yet, since he is still ‘very early in the process’. The pilot order has just come in and there is no cast or crew finalized at the moment. The prolific author doesn’t have a title in mind either, but might just use ‘The Long Night’ as the moniker. He also said this probably will not be accepted since HBO will ‘want to work the phrase ‘game of thrones’ in there somewhere’. He said there will be more details revealed soon.
Speaking of details, Martin also revealed that this is not the only prequel GOT fans will see on TV. Initially, there were 5 prequel ideas, but one of them has already been ‘shelved’. However, 3 others will go ahead into production. These prequels will tell tales of different periods in the GOT universe and feature a bunch of different characters with vast storylines. Martin confirmed that these are ‘in active development’. He is working on the script for the pilot in collaboration with Jane Goldman. She has also written for and contributed to other popular movie franchises such as X-Men, Stardust, Kickass, and Kingsmen.
If Martin is to be believed, then fans can assume the prequel will be set approximately 12,000 years before GOT. It will show Westeros as a completely different place, not ruled by Queens and Kings, but inhabited by wild creatures. The prequel will shed light on all these mysterious creatures, some perhaps being mythical beings like dragons and giants. It will also show storylines for the non-human creatures who live in Weirwoods and are called the Children of the Forest.
These characters will be key in understanding how Westeros came to be. In the words of Bran Stark, “In the Dawn Age of Westeros, before the coming of man and the raising of castles and cities, there were only the Children of the Forest.”
Martin will incorporate a lot of historic events that shaped Westeros and give answers to many questions that fans have had about GOT.
Westeros came into being after the First Men arrived into Essos on horseback. They not only brought their own customs, traditions and culture, but also advanced weaponry and way of life. This led to rifts between them and the Children of the Forest, who did not appreciate the Men cutting down their ancient spirits and Gods who resided in the forests. This was how the first war between the Men and Children came about. And the rest was history.
This history will soon be unearthed when Martin finishes the script for the pilot. GOT fans are beside themselves with excitement and cannot wait for more updates!
