Earlier this week, Emmy Rossum announced that she would not be returning to Showtime’s Shameless for its ninth season, and her on-screen absentee father, William H. Macy, think she “made the right the choice.”
The 31-year-old actress took to Facebook to share a lengthy note to bid farewell to the show, in an emotionally cathartic manner.
In an interview with Entertaintment Weekly, William H. Macy, who takes on the role of Frank Gallagher on Shameless, expressed how he feels about Emmy’s decision to quit the series.
“We’ve been expecting it. I tell you, when you get to season 9 and you think of [whether] to keep going, it’s daunting. It’s hard not to think of: ‘What would my life be post-Shameless?’ And part of it is very frightening and part of it is very exciting,” William shared.
William H. Macy has played the role of Emmy’s character, Fiona Gallagher’s father on-screen for the past eight seasons, and only had words of appreciation and encouragement to lend to the wonderful actress.
“She’s got another show that she’s an executive producer on, so she’s going right into something and she wants to branch out,” he stated. “Plus, she just got married. I wish her well. I can’t wait to see what she’s going to do next.”
There was a lot of speculation surrounding Emmy’s decision to leave Shameless, with some sources suggesting it could be about the contract dispute that she had to engage in with the producers ahead of season 8. However, Emmy’s farewell note indicates that her reason to quit stems from an emotional place.
“See, in real life, unlike Fiona, I’m an only child. I never had a big family. Being ensconced in that messy Gallagher family love is something I’d always dreamed of. But even off set, it feels real,” Emmy shared.
She ended her post on an optimistic note, and assured her fans that her presence could still be felt on the show.
“I know you will continue on without me, for now. There is much more Gallagher story to be told. I will always be rooting for my family. Try not to think of me as gone, just think of me as moving down the block,” she ended her post. “With love, always.”
Emmy Rossum has much more in store for her, now that she will not be restricted to playing the role of Fiona Gallagher, and will possibly take on a lot more challenging roles in future.
The upcoming season of Shameless will premier on September 9th, on Showtime.
