Abel Tesfaye, popularly known as The Weeknd, made an emotional return on Coachella stage and broke down in tears while performing a song about his ex-girlfriend, Selena Gomez, on Friday.
During his Coachella performance, The Weeknd sang his new hit song, Call Out My Name, and nearly stopped in the middle of the song because he felt ultra emotional. Last year, he publicly made out with then-girlfriend, Gomez, on stage.
The 28-year-old singer choked up while singing and couldn’t finish a lot of lines from the song. One of the lines he couldn’t bring himself to finish were, “And when times were rough, when times were rough/I made sure I held you close to me.”
The Wolves singer and The Weekend ended on a rather abrupt note last year. The pair were always seen being super in love and would often post pictures of themselves together.
Around the same time, Gomez underwent kidney problems because of her lupus condition. She had to have a transplant, an issue The Weeknd has apparently referenced in his song when he sang, “I said I didn’t feel nothing baby, but I lied I almost cut a piece of myself for your life.”
Lyrically, the Starboy singer wanted to give Gomez his kidney, but she reportedly left him for Justin Bieber. Fans were supportive and left a lot of sweet comments addressed to him. His fans in the audience also wanted to comfort him.
During his performance, Gomez was nowhere to be seen as she didn’t attend Coachella this year. Although her ex-boyfriend, Bieber, was spotted at the festival, he didn’t comment on The Weeknd’s performance.
The Weeknd also sang another soulful melody, Wasted Times, which devoted fans claimed that it was dedicated to another of his ex-girlfriends, Bella Hadid. They also assumed that it was about him wanting Hadid back.
The Victoria’s Secret supermodel was seen at Coachella but there was no footage of her listening to her ex’s dramatic performance.
This was the first time The Weeknd performed tracks from his new EP, My Dear Melancholy. The widespread and successful album had fans fully believe The Weeknd wrote it for his exes, to express his regrets. We hope he feels better and picks himself up after his emotional performance!
