The 2019 Oscars will not have a host after Kevin Hart pulled out over homophobia controversy. This has not happened in 30 years.
Variety reports that the awards this year, officially the 91st Annual Academy Awards, will not have a host since they have not managed to replace Kevin Hart. Instead, various stars will be used in place of “one marquee name to kick things off in a monologue filled with Trump zingers.”
There are just six weeks left until the Oscars, so the award show is struggling to find A-listers to take part in its performance. The reason why the Oscars are struggling at such a last minute is because Kevin Hart was chosen as the host, and he later pulled out of it.
Hart stepped in because just a little while after his hosting gig announcement, a series of homophobic statements resurfaced on social media. The Oscars then gave him an ultimatum, saying he would have to apologize if he wanted to stay on as the host, or they would take back their offer.
The comedian eventually passed on the chance, saying, “I’m gonna be me and stand my ground. Regardless, The Academy I’m thankful and appreciative of the opportunity. If it goes away, no harm no foul.”
In a tweet, he said, “I have made the choice to step down from hosting this year’s Oscar’s….this is because I do not want to be a distraction on a night that should be celebrated by so many amazing talented artists. I sincerely apologize to the LGBTQ community for my insensitive words from my past.”
Even Ellen DeGeneres stepped in, inviting Hart onto her show and saying he should not be swayed by “a small group of people being very, very loud.” She added, “We are a huge group of people who love you and want to see you host the Oscars.”
Hart shared that he did not want to distract everyone’s attention from the actual Oscar winners by pinpointing attention on him and his controversy. Ellen implored, “You are apologizing again right now. You’ve done it. Don’t let those people win. Host the Oscars.”
Hart said however, “The moment came and it was a blessing and I was excited at the opportunity and I still am. In my mind I got the job, it was a dream job, and things came up that simply prohibited it from happening. But I don’t believe in going backwards.”
The Oscars team has not officially responded to Kevin Hart’s comments on Ellen or about continuing with the show without a host.
