Taylor Swift tells Ellen why she’s been silent for the last few years. Her appearance on the show is her first in-person interview in four years.
Swift appeared on Ellen after four years, and addressed her consistent silence to Ellen and the audience. She said, “With [Reputation], I just basically wanted to make music and not explain it. At that time I coined this phrase, ‘There will be no explanation, there will just be reputation,’ because I am dramatic. That’s a very dramatic thing, but it rhymed, it was kind of catchy and so I stuck with it.”
She also revealed that this is the era of meticulous clues in the form of ‘Easter Eggs’, which are basically hints meant to lead fans to crucial details about upcoming releases and scheduled dates. She also told Ellen that she had dropped an Easter Egg during the interview, and that fans that were paying attention would know what it was.

The 29 year old singer also revealed that some fans are sometimes totally off about clues, saying, “There were some fans who thought I had something to do with ‘Avengers: Endgame, which I would have loved to have been asked, but I wasn’t asked to be in it at all. We had the single coming out the same day and I have a song that was called ‘Endgame,’ so they were like, oh my god, she’s gonna defeat Thanos and– I let everyone down. Again.”
She also talked about the experience of adopting Benjamin Button, who made her debut in Taylor’s new music video for Me!. She said, “They show up with this little kitten. His handler was like, ‘Do you want to hold him first?’ I was like, ‘Absolutely I do.’ And so they hand me this tiny cat.”
She continued, “I never really experienced a cat that the second I held this little kitten, he started purring like a motor. I was like, ‘Whose cat is this? You’re really lucky, whoever owns this cat.’ And then, the girl was like, ‘Actually, he doesn’t have a home.’ And then my eyes turned into hearts and I just immediately was like, ‘I can’t think about anything else.'”
Taylor also talked about her upcoming musical Cats, saying, “It’s like all my dreams came true on the set of this film. They’re like, ‘You can come to set as much as you want,’ and I ended up being there like every day for four months. They’re like, ‘Taylor’s doing cat school again- again. She’s still doing cat school.”
Taylor also talked about the particular issue of sleep eating, saying, “I go downstairs and rummage through the kitchen and eat whatever I can find and it’s really less like a human being and more like a raccoon in a dumpster. The next morning, we walk downstairs and we’re like, ‘What happened here?’ And I don’t remember.”
Talking about her most rebellious teenage moment, Taylor threw back to 2008, saying, “Probably when I put Joe Jonas on blast on your show,” she said. “That was too much. We laugh about it now, but that was mouthy, just some teenage stuff there.”
Taylor revealed that TS7 is complete and the second single from it will be released soon.
