After a series of live chats with fans on Instagram, Selena Gomez announced that she is taking a break from social media once again.
This weekend, Gomez went live on Instagram to talk about everything from her middle name to her struggles with anxiety and depression to her focus on studying and education. Later, she announced the break with a post on Instagram.
She wrote, “Update: taking a social media break. Again. As much as I am grateful for the voice that social media gives each of us, I am equally grateful to be able to step back and live my life present to the moment I have been given. Kindness and encouragement only for a bit! Just remember- negative comments can hurt anybody’s feelings. Obvi.”
During her live chat, Gomez addressed her struggles with depression, saying, “Depression was my life for five years straight. I think before I turned 26 there was like this weird time in my life [where] I think I was kind of on auto pilot for about five years. Kinda just going through the motions and figuring out who I am and just doing the best I could and then slowly but surely doing that.”
She said, “[The spotlight on my actions] made me feel like every time I try to do something right, every time I try to do something good I felt like people were picking me apart.”
She said her faith in God and her personal courage made her get through it, explaining, “I would make myself have the courage to like just keep going and I think that slowly but surely just kinda happened.”
Fans also asked Gomez why she has so many followers on Instagram. With 143 million followers, the star is one of the most followed celebrities on the social media app. She said she did not understand the issue, explaining, “Nothing is my tactic. I don’t even have the damn app on my phone.” She added, “It’s just a number and it’s insane that people are so obsessed with a number. It’s like chill out. Who gives a f—k?”
She also revealed to fans that she is almost ready to release a new album, saying, “I have been working on it for three years and now I feel like I can finally talk to you guys, so this is good.”
When a fan asked her why she had waited for so long, she said “I don’t feel like I need to release anything that isn’t complete.”
She said the next album will also be defining for her, adding that the message is about inspiration and self-realization.
Gomez did not reveal how long her break is expected to last.
