Sarah Hyland revealed how much she has been struggling with her physical and mental health in the past two years, which led to her leaving social media.
Hyland has never made any pretenses about the fact that she struggles with her health, but the Modern Family star has also never gone into explicit detail of the issues she has. This changes with her tell all interview with SELF Magazine.
In 2012, the actress revealed that she suffers from kidney dysplasia and had gone through a kidney transplant after a donation from her father.
In October of 2016 however, Hyland’s body started to reject the organ and was not filtering out waste the right way. She went through fatigue, infections and frequent fevers, after which she visited a doctor who told her that her kidney was failing.
“We did all of these tests and all of these treatments to try and save the kidney,” she told SELF. The attempts did not succeed.
On Valentine’s Day in 2017, Hyland had a port implanted into her chest and went on dialysis multiple times a week. The sessions did have significant side effects, including weight loss which caused a lot of public scrutiny. Hyland had to go to social media and confirm to fans that she was not anorexic.
Hyland’s father’s kidney was then removed from her system and her brother’s kidney was found to be a perfect match. Despite this, Hyland had a depressive moment with the failure of the first.
She said, “When a family member gives you a second chance at life, and it fails, it almost feels like it’s your fault. It’s not. But it does. For a long time, I was contemplating suicide, because I didn’t want to fail my little brother like I failed my dad.”
She further explained, “I had gone through [my whole life] of always being a burden, of always having to be looked after, having to be cared for.”
She also said that she reached out at this point to Wells Adam, who she had only met three days ago, about some of the suicidal thoughts she had been having.
She said, “For anybody that wants to reach out to somebody but doesn’t really know how because they’re too proud or they think that they’ll be looked upon as weak, it’s not a shameful thing to say. It’s not a shameful thing to share.”
While the transplant itself went well, Hyland has since then also been battling endometriosis and an abdominal hernia, and had two surgeries in spring to treat both conditions.
She said, “Laparoscopic [surgery is] one of the most painful things I’ve ever been through in my life.”
Hyland said that despite everything, Wells has stood by her side, “He’s seen me at my worst,” she told the magazine of their relationship post-transplant . “I think that’s why I feel the most beautiful in his eyes, because he still finds me beautiful after seeing all that.”
Adams recently took to social media to post a sweet message for Hyland. He wrote, “This beautiful specimen has had a tough couple of weeks. I’m here to remind you @sarahhyland that there is light amongst all the darkness. If you ever doubt that, just look at this picture and remember how awesome we are.”
Hyland recently told fans that she was leaving social media after being heavily criticized for asking for donations for her cousin, who passed away after an accident with a drunk driver.
Posting about this interview was the first thing Hyland did upon return. She wrote on social media, “I say words here that hopefully others can relate to and feel like they’re no alone. Hopefully those that are lucky enough not to experience this will learn about something new and take a moment to appreciate their health. Thank you so much to all the love and light I have received today. I love you all.”
Hyland has not revealed if this means she is properly back on social media.
