Sarah Hyland has quit social media after fans dragged her through the mud for asking for donations for her cousins funeral and hospital expenses.
Hyland revealed that Trevor Canaday passed away on Saturday due to a drunk driving incident. She posted the message in her Instagram story with a screenshot from the GoFundMe page.
“This is my 14 year old cousin Trevor. Yesterday, he was killed by a drunk driver. My uncle is still in the hospital in need of more surgeries,” she posted.
Hyland also told her fans that the drunk driver “hit my Uncle’s car so fast my cousin (who was wearing a seatbelt) was ejected from the car.”
The GoFundMe page itself has been set up by Trevor’s mom Becky and sisters Tessa and Zoee. The family is from Omaha, Nebraska.
The page says, “On Saturday 12/1 Trevor and his dad were driving to a show choir event and were involved in a serious car accident due to a drunk driver.”
It added, “Bryan, is recovering physically, but sadly Trevor has gained his wings and is singing and playing some crazy football in heaven.”
The aim of the page is to raise money for the funeral and medical costs for Bryan.
The page explains, “We hope to have the funeral entirely covered and then will move forward with covering medical expenses from keeping Trevor stable and from dads surgery’s and rest at the hospital (UNMC).”
It added that the money would be going to Becky, “We will be getting the money to Mom (Becky) as soon as possible with the help of all of you by her being the beneficiary and depositing money into her account to relieve her worries as much as we can.”
The page also reveals, “Trevor was a funny, smart, innovative, athletic, goofy kid and he was so loved,” it says. “His memory will live on in many ways. Please help us do this for the family now to help ease their suffering away from money to focus on healing emotionally.”
Modern Family star Ariel Winter also posted a screenshot, advocating Hyland and her family’s cause.
She wrote, “This is absolutely devastating… @sarahhyland’s uncle and cousin were hit by a drunk driver, who had 2 DUIs already, and unfortunately her cousin Trevor didn’t make it. His father is still in the hospital in critical condition.”
Hyland also took to Twitter to advocate her cause, writing, “Yesterday my 14 year old cousin was killed by a drunk driver named Jeffrey Eggerling. My Uncle is in the hospital awaiting more surgeries. PLEASE keep your prayers with my family during this horrific time. And please DONATE.”
She also linked the GoFundMe page there, and fans could not resist asking her why she was not stepping in financially.
“I’m so sorry for your loss. But, explain why your asking others to donate?” one asked.
“12k is small change for her. Asking fans to donate is ridiculous,” another wrote.
Yet another one said, “Your net worth is 9 mil, pretty sure you don’t need donations…”
“Why are you asking us to donate to your family’s situation? You’re loaded, you should be paying for it. Shame on you,” another one wrote.
“Drunk driving and young deaths are heart breaking. But a popular and wealthy actress who’s apparently close enough with her cousin to post about her death….and then ask for donations for the funeral is absolutely disgusting,” one harshly wrote.
Another one said, “I’m sorry but don’t you earn like 70k per episode? Surely you don’t need donations from your fans.”
Hyland initially took to Twitter to defend herself, writing, “I’d like to ask those who have negative thoughts or opinions about the tragedy that happened to my family, to keep them to themselves. You don’t know all the details. And how dare you attack when a beautiful life has been lost.”
She later wrote, “You guys finally did it. Your horrible negative ignorant words have broken me. Happy? Staying offline for a while. I have a special announcement and video releasing on Wednesday I believe. So. There’s that.”
Despite the objections of some of these fans, the family has met their goal of $25,000.
