During a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Ryan Gosling shared his early career aspirations, and how he just fell short of realizing them.
Gosling was on the show to promote his upcoming movie, First Man. Kimmel asked him about his interest in the NBA, to which Gosling replied that despite wanting to, he did not get to watch anything because of his kids. He said, “Well, but I have a 2 year old and a 3 and a half year old so let’s be honest, I’m not watching anything that doesn’t have a talking tiger in it.”

Kimmel, who has a 3 year old and a 1 year old, then proceeded to give him a little tip on how to watch basketball with young kids in the house. He said, “If you hold the kid right up to the TV and go ball, and have them follow the ball, they will watch the ball. At least my kids will sit there and watch the ball.”
He also added, “It works on pets too.”
Kimmel also asked Gosling if he had ever thought of being a basketball player himself. Gosling revealed that he had, but that several crucial shortcomings had hampered him from realizing his wildest dream. He explained, “Well I, you know like any kid growing up in the 90s, I thought I was going to be in the NBA, I was sure of it. A few setbacks: I was very short for a very long time, and I had no talent. So it didn’t matter.”
He also revealed that while in his freshman year of high school, he once thought he had made it to the NBA when his coach made a very serious phone call. It turned out that the coach was doing something else entirely and Gosling’s dreams were crushed immediately.
He said, “I was on the freshman team and there was a moment in practice when my coach was picking up the phone really slowly and looking at me. And I thought, she’s definitely saying like, it’s the NBA and she’s saying, you’ve got to get down here and see this, you know. But I think she was just ordering pizza, and she was like, I got the perfect guy to pick those up.”
First Man stars Ryan Gosling, Jon Bernthal and Crown‘s Claire Foy. The movie will open in theatrers on October 12 of this year.
