Rami Malek and Bohemian Rhapsody win big at the 2019 Golden Globes Awards, and thank Freddie Mercury for his lifelong inspiration and authenticity which led to this movie.
Rami Malek won among a competitive group for Best Actor in a Motion Picture-Drama at the Golden Globes. He won against Bradley Cooper, Willem Dafoe, Lucas Hedges and John David Washington.
In his acceptance speech, he said, “I am beyond moved right now. My heart is pounding out of my chest right now.” He also thanked Brian May and Roger Taylor of the band Queen, “for ensuring that authenticity and inclusivity exists in music and in the world and all of us.”
Malek also paid a tribute to Freddie Mercury, who died in 1991 at the age of 45 due to AIDS. He said, “Thank you to Freddie Mercury for giving me the joy of a lifetime. I love you, you beautiful man. This is for and because of you, gorgeous.”
Joseph Mazzello told E! that he loved Malek’s depiction of Mercury, saying, “I got goose bumps because he just embodied him so perfectly. It was a crazy thing to know someone so well and just be who are you?”
He added that he thought Mercury would have loved the movie, saying, “I think he would genuinely just hope that people enjoyed it, that they loved the music, that he felt like we captured these characters and his essence well enough and close enough.”
The cast of the movie also attended the award for Best Motion Picture-Drama. The executive producers of the movie Graham King and Jim Beach accepted the award.
Kim said, “Wow, now, that was unexpected. Thank you so much to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. That’s amazing.”
He added, “The power of movies is that it brings us all together. Freddie Mercury and Queen did that so successfully through their music and that’s what we always wanted to accomplish in the cinemas. To see that magic come alive and to see the incredible response of this film has been truly humbling to everyone. I want to thank everyone.”
He also thanked Mercury, saying, “And finally to Freddie Mercury, thank you for showing us the power of embracing your true self. This one is for you. Thank you so much.”
Brian May attended the ceremony with Malek.
