Pete Davidson addressed his severed engagement to Ariana Grande in a series of self-deprecating jokes during stand-up with Judd Apatow.
Davidson and Grande met on SNL in May and after a whirlwind romance , got engaged and moved in together in a few months. The couple were living in Grande’s multi-million dollar apartment in Manhattan and went as far as getting a pet pig together called Piggy Smallz and getting matching tattoos. Last weekend, the news broke that the couple have split for the time being after Grande went through a few rough experiences with the death of her ex-boyfriend, Mac Miller, due to a supposed drug overdose.
The 24 old year SNL star co-hosted the Judd & Pete for America show on Saturday alongside Judd Apatow in his first appearance with the split. The show was a benefit for Swing Left, and was hosted at the Largo at the Coronet in West Hollywood.
Davidson took the stage by facing his break-up head on, saying, ” Well, as you could tell, I don’t want to be here. There’s a lot going on.” Touching on the fact that he lived with Grande and since the breakup had moved back into his parent’s house, he said, ” Does anybody have any open rooms? Looking for a roommate?”
Pete also addressed the tattoos that he and Grande got together, which for him included a bunny ears tattoo behind his ears just a little while after him and Grande started dating. He said, ” Um, I’ve been covering a bunch of tattoos, that’s fun. I’m f**king 0 for 2 in the tattoo [department]. Yeah, I’m afraid to get my mom tattooed on me, that’s how bad it is.” Grande has also been covering the ‘pete’ tattoo she got on her ring finger, and hid it under a band-aid for her recent appearance.
Davidson also joked about his friends making fun of him, saying, “So, obviously, you know … we broke up or whatever, but when me and [Grande] first got engaged, we got tattoos. And it was in a magazine like, ‘Was Pete Davidson stupid?’ And 93 percent said yes. So my boy, he was like, ‘Don’t listen to that bulls**t man.’ … And the other day we were in my kitchen and he was like, ‘Yo, bro. Turns out you were stupid.’ ”
Apatow later gave Davidson some credit for appearing on the show despite his recent heartbreak, to which Davidson replied saying, “Well, you put me on the flyer, I had to. … f**k my feelings.” Apatow matter-of-factly told Davidson that he cared more about America than his feelings, and he said, ” I feel like I am America. I’m a good guy that just keeps getting kicked in the d**k. You’re like, ‘Ah, that f**king poor kid. Hope he doesn’t kill himself.’ That’s America.”
Davidson also cracked a few jokes about his engagement to Grande back when it first happened on this season of SNL. He said, “Yeah, I did, I got engaged, and no one could believe it. And I can’t believe it, and I get it. She’s the number one pop star in the world and I’m that guy from SNL that everyone thinks is in desperate need of more blood.”
Grande herself addressed her split with Davidson recently, writing and later deleting on her Instagram story, “Time to say bye bye to the internet for just a lil bit. It’s hard not to bump news n stuff that i’m not tryna to see rn. It’s very sad and we’re all tryin very hard to keep goin. Love u. And thank u for bein here always.”
Ariana and Pete have not ruled out a future reconciliation.
