Recently, Miley Cyrus cleaned her Instagram account entirely, leaving just a black avatar. Since the purge, #MileyIsComing has been trending on Instagram.

Other celebrities have done this before Cyrus as well. Blake Lively wiped her Instagram clean and unfollowed everyone she previously followed before to promote her new movie. In 2017, Taylor Swift cleared her whole Instagram, Twitter and Facebook clean to draw attention to the release of her new album, Reputation. Zayn Malik did the same for his new album. Each time a celebrity has done this, it has generated mass attention to them, solidifying this as a legitimate publicity tactic.

Cyrus herself just cleared her Instagram, she did not unfollow anyone. Her Twitter now has a black avatar and cover photo, but her tweets have not been deleted. Her website is also down.

The purge is likely not indicative of Cyrus’ troubles with Liam Hemsworth, since she still follows him and he has all his photos of her on his social media.

Cyrus used her Instagram to advocate for causes she supports, post pictures of her pets and animals and update her fans on her relationship with Liam Hemsworth. We do not yet know if she archived her photos and they will make a return or whether the posts are gone forever.

Cyrus’ last album, Younger Now, came out in 2017, so this purge is likely indicative of a new phase in her music catalogue. While some fans believe this, others also think the clean slate is a sign of the singer changing her looks. Since she has been in the industry, Miley Cyrus has changed aesthetics countless times, and some fans think a new one is coming.

Fans have been using the trending hashtag #MileyIsComing to tweet out their thoughts about Cyrus’ disappearance. Most fans have also put up black avatars and black cover photos as a sign of solidarity with the popstar.

There is no indication of when Cyrus will explain what the Instagram purge is about.
