Nyong’o said, “I was going through a hard time professionally, and I was just in a funk. I was working abroad, and my best friend came to cheer me up. He played ‘Shake It Off’ on his phone, and we just had a dance party in my bedroom.”

Nyong’o’s character in the movie plays Shake It Off on ukulele in the movie, so she said it was extra special to her that the song was in the movie because it had helped her personally. She was really excited that the song was going to be in the movie. However, after she read the script she found out that the film was having a tough time getting the rights to the song.
