Lupita Nyong’o has revealed that Taylor Swift’s music helped her get through a tough professional period she faced during the Little Monsters filming.
Earlier this week, the Oscar-winning actress appeared at a screening of her new movie, Little Monsters, at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. She talked about how she was having a “hard time professionally” and how Taylor Swift and her music helped her to step out of that weird funk.
Nyong’o said, “I was going through a hard time professionally, and I was just in a funk. I was working abroad, and my best friend came to cheer me up. He played ‘Shake It Off’ on his phone, and we just had a dance party in my bedroom.”
Nyong’o’s character in the movie plays Shake It Off on ukulele in the movie, so she said it was extra special to her that the song was in the movie because it had helped her personally. She was really excited that the song was going to be in the movie. However, after she read the script she found out that the film was having a tough time getting the rights to the song.
Nyong’o revealed that she took it upon herself to write to Taylor Swift herself, saying, “I wrote Taylor Swift myself and asked her, and told her that story. And she said yes!”
Nyong’o was part of the ensemble that won the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture for Black Panther.
