The star announced the news in a video posted on Instagram, in which he said that he protested the treatment he has received regarding his homophobic tweets from the past.

He said, “So I just got a call from The Academy. That call basically said, ‘Kevin, apologize for your tweets or we’re going to have to move on and find another host.'”

Shockingly, Hart said he passed up on the huge opportunity to host the 2019 Oscars.

Explaining himself, he said, “The reason that I passed is I’ve addressed it several times. That’s not the first time this has come up. I’ve addressed it. I’ve spoken on it. I’ve said where the rights and wrongs were. I’ve said who I am now versus who I was then. I’ve done it. I’m not gonna continue to go back and tap into the days of old when I’ve moved on. I’m in a completely different space in my life.”

He added, “The same energy that went into finding those old tweets could be the same energy put into finding the response to the questions that have been asked year after year after year.”

Concluding his explanation, he said, “I’m gonna be me and stand my ground. Regardless, The Academy I’m thankful and appreciative of the opportunity. If it goes away, no harm no foul.”

Hart said that while some other people might apologize in light of this situation, he refused to do it.

Among Hart’s problematic tweets in the past is one from 2011 where he said, “Yo if my son comes home & try’s 2 play with my daughters doll house I’m going 2 break it over his head & say n my voice ‘stop that’s gay’.”

In a 2015 interview with Rolling Stone, Hart said that one of his “biggest fears is my son growing up and being gay.”

He elaborated, “Keep in mind, I’m not homophobic… Be happy. Do what you want to do. But me, as a heterosexual male, if I can prevent my son from being gay, I will.”

In a previous Instagram video Hart shared, he said, “Stop looking for reasons to be negative…stop searching for reasons to be angry…I swear I wish you guys could see/feel/understand the mental place that I am in. I am truly happy people… there is nothing that you can do to change that….NOTHING.”

He added, “I work hard on a daily basis to spread positivity to all…with that being said. If you want to search my history or past and anger yourselves with what u find that is fine with me. I ‘m almost 40 years old and I’m in love with the man that I am becoming.”

As a parting message, Hart emphasized, “You LIVE and YOU LEARN & YOU GROW & YOU MATURE. I live to Love…. Please take your negative energy and put it into something constructive. Please…What’s understood should never have to be said. I LOVE EVERYBODY..ONCE AGAIN EVERYBODY. If you choose to not believe me then that’s on you.”
