After a very politicized SNL appearance and a string of controversial comments and opinions on social media, Kanye West has caved into the backlash and deleted his social media.
West performed as the musical guest on the premiere of season 44 of Saturday Night Live. He gave a pro-Trump speech when the cameras cut out which incited a mixed response from the audience.
He said, “It’s so many times that I talk to like, a white person about this, and they say, ‘How could you like Trump? He’s racist.’ Well if I was concerned about racism, I would have moved out of America a long time ago.”
He added, “We don’t just make our decisions off of racism. I’ma break it down to you right now: If someone inspires me and I connect with them, I don’t have to believe in all they policies.”
Addressing his Make America Great Again hat that he is often seen wearing out and about and wore onstage as well, West said, “They bully me backstage and say, ‘Don’t go out there with that hat on.’ They bully me backstage. They bully me! And then they say I’m in a sunken place.”
West later tweeted a photo wearing the same hat, writing, “This represents good and America becoming whole again. We will no longer outsource to other countries. We build factories here in America and create jobs. We will provide jobs for all who are free from prisons as we abolish the 13th amendment. Message sent with love.”
He received a lot of backlash for this opinion, since the 13th amendment is the one that eradicated slavery. Captain America star Chris Evans and singer Lana Del Ray also spoke up about their disagreements with the rapper.
In support of Trump, West tweeted, “Like many, I don’t watch Saturday Night Live (even though I past hosted it) – no longer funny, no talent or charm. It is just a political ad for the Dems. Word is that Kanye West, who put on a MAGA hat after the show (despite being told “no”), was great. He’s leading the charge!”
West then received further criticism for not dropping his new album Yandhi which was promised during his SNL appearance. After intense fan speculation and criticism, West revealed that he would be releasing it on November 23, Black Friday.
According to a source that spoke to E!, “They definitely have their issues, but Kim always defends Kanye publicly and tries to be supportive. She believes Kanye is entitled to his opinion and can express it freely. She may not always agree with him, but she still feels he’s allowed to believe what he wants.”
About her thoughts on Kanye’s purge of social media, the source said, “Kim’s not surprised in the least bit. Kanye loves to speak his mind and that’s not going to change. Whether or not Kim shares the same beliefs, she knows she’s never going to stop Kanye from expressing himself.”
West did not indicate if he would be returning to social media anytime soon.
