Hannah Graf, the highest ranking transgender soldier in the British Army, has been nominated by Dominic West to replace Daniel Craig in the upcoming James Bond movies.
Dominic West has said that there should be a transgender James Bond in the future. The 49-year-old actor said that after Daniel Craig, Hannah Graf could replace him as the secret agent in the franchise. Graf, 31, is the highest-ranking soldier in the British Army.
West told The Sunday Times Magazine, “She’s a beautiful girl who could be Bond. That’s actually a brilliant idea. They should have a transgender Bond because there are a lot of transgender people in the army.”
West knows Hannah through the film Colette where he starred alongside Graf’s husband Jake, a 40-year-old trans actor.
Graf responded to West’s suggestion, saying, “I’m very flattered that Dominic thought of me. I don’t think I’m going to become an actress anytime soon, but there’s no reason why there shouldn’t be a transgender Bond. We’ve seen too many men in hero-type roles and women playing second fiddle.”
Hannah and Jake have been married since March of this year, after getting together in 2015. Hannah said it would be inspirational to see a female James Bond, but also wrote on social media that her husband Jake would be a perfect candidate for the role.
Calls for a female James Bond are nothing new, but some people are extremely opposed to a woman getting a role already defined by a man.
Daniel Craig’s wife, Rachel Weisz, is one such person. In an interview with The Telegraph, Weisz said that the role had been created by Ian Fleming as “particularly male”.
She added, “Why not create your own story rather than jumping onto the shoulders and being compared to all those other male predecessors? Women are really fascinating and interesting, and should get their own stories.”
Instead of a woman, Craig is expected to be replaced by Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba or Tom Hardy.
Craig will soon start working on the fifth, and his final, Bond movie.
