For the first time since she overdosed on heroin about two weeks ago, Demi Lovato has spoken up about the incident, and about her drug addiction itself.

Demi had been hospitalized since she overdosed on heroin in her LA home, and had to be rushed to the hospital. It was since reported that she was recovering, and had agreed to go to rehab. While we saw supportive messages from her friends and family, Demi had not yet spoken to her fans about what had happened.

She has finally broken her silence with a detailed message on Instagram.

Demi wrote, “I have always been transparent about my journey with addiction. What I’ve learned is that this illness is not something that disappears or fades with time. It is something I must continue to overcome and have not done yet.”

She went on to thank those who were there for her during this time, including her family, her team and the staff at Cedars-Sinai, where she was hospitalized. She also expressed her gratitude for being alive and well.

“I want to thank God for keeping me alive and well. To my fans, I am forever grateful for all of your love and support throughout this past week and beyond. Your positive thoughts and prayers have helped me navigate through this difficult time,” she wrote. “I want to thank my family, my team, and the staff at Cedars-Sinai who have been by my side this entire time. Without them I wouldn’t be here writing this letter to all of you.”

She then thanked her fans for their love, while also saying she now needs time to recover and attain sobriety again. This seems to confirm that she is indeed going to a rehabilitation center.

“I now need time to heal and focus on my sobriety and road to recovery. The love you have all shown me will never be forgotten and I look forward to the day where I can say I came out on the other side.”

“I will keep fighting,” she emotionally concluded.

The 25-year-old has struggled with substance abuse in the past. In 2011, she went to rehab to seek further treatment for bipolar disorder, bulimia, self-harm and addiction. She relapsed after leaving the facility, and then had to go to a sober living facility for a year.

She recently revealed her relapse in her new song, Sober. Demi sang:

Mama, I’m so sorry I’m not sober anymore
And daddy please forgive me for the drinks spilled on the floor.
And I’m sorry for the fans I lost who watched me fall again
I wanna be a role model, but I’m only human.”

She then heartbreakingly sings:

“I’m sorry that I’m here again
I promise I’ll get help
It wasn’t my intention
I’m sorry to myself.
