Chrissy Teigen sent the internet into an uproar as she and her 2-year-old daughter Luna unknowingly played around with a tarantula hawk wasp.
Teigen posted a video on Instagram and Twitter with the bug on her hand. She captioned the video, “I swear to god if one of you tells me this is a deadly bug I will vomit,” adding,”time for another game of ‘what’s this bug!?’!”

As Twitter later told the model and mother of two, the insect that Teigen was calling ‘nice’ was actually a tarantula hawk wasp, a species of spider wasp.
The wasp can put one’s arm in a state of paralysis if bitten. According to the UK Natural History Museum, the tarantula hawk has ‘the most painful wasp sting in the world’. Luckily for Teigen and her daughter, the NHM notes that ‘tarantula hawks are fairly docile unless provoked’. Teigen and Luna, who were only observing the wasp as it sat on Teigen’s arm, seemed to be completely out of danger.
In a long Twitter rant, Teigen explained talked her fans through her experience. After posting the initial video, she said, “I think I just gently played with a hornet“.
Twitter then flooded with memes and information for Teigen about her causal soiree with a hawk wasp, and she replied to say, “oh my god but he was so nice“.
Defending the wasp, Teigen said, “guys I think he is one of the good ones,” continuing, “maybe I am tarzana, queen of the bugs“. She then asked, “is there a god damn entomologist here.”
A few hours later, Teigen’s freak out continued, “Oh dear here comes the fun..okay should I not hold potentially deadly creatures? no. should I do it around my daughter? Super no. But it crawled on me and seemed injured and well, not angry, not scary. And I’m normally super freaked (remember house centipede??).” She added, “I put it down gently and he crawled right back. maybe it was my reincarnated relative. Or puddy the bulldog. Either way, everyone is okay and the world continues to turn.”
She later took to Twitter again to reflect on her playtime with a tarantula wasp, writing, “Unconfirmed. Twitter followers say tarantula hawk wasp (how a thousand people ‘know’ of this bug, I do not know) and actual entomologists are divided (no actual entomologist says tarantula hawk wasp) – either way, it was a um..ballsy move. I blame the heat AND MY WARM, KIND HEART.”
Reassuring all the animal lovers out there, Teigen wrote, “Anyhow bug and I are friends now. And perhaps with time, lovers.”
Both Teigen and Luna have escaped completely unscathed from the incident.
