Casey Affleck recently addressed the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements, and what he has learned in the recent years.
The Manchester by the Sea star came under the media attention after his female coworkers – the cinematographer and a producer on the sets of I’m Still Here – filed a civil lawsuit for the breach of contract. One of the women also sued for sexual harassment.
Despite facing two lawsuits for sexual harassment, Casey still came to receive his Oscar but the actress Brie Larson handed him the award very reluctantly and did not clap at all as a silent protest.
After having to withdraw from presenting the best actress award at the Oscars, this is the first time Casey Affleck has come out in the open and addressed the allegations against him for sexual harassment and mocking behavior on set.
The actor finally came to terms with the case and accepted the allegations. In an interview with the Associated Press, the Oscar winning actor did indeed admit that his behavior with his female colleagues has been unprofessional and violating.
“In this business, women have been underrepresented and underpaid and objectified and diminished and humiliated and belittled in a bazillion ways and just generally had a mountain of grief thrown at them forever,” he said.
Affleck also appreciated the #MeToo movement and added, “No one was really making too much of a fuss about it, myself included, until a few women with the kind of courage and wisdom to stand up and say, ’You know what? Enough is enough.’”
“Those are the people who are kind of leading this conversation and should be leading the conversation. And I know just enough to know that in general I need to keep my mouth shut and listen and try to figure out what’s going on and be a supporter and a follower in the little, teeny tiny ways that I can,” he added.
Affleck added that this was the first time he has been involved in a case like this, and he deeply regrets it. “I had never had any complaints like that made about me before in my life and it was really embarrassing,” he said. “And I didn’t know how to handle it, and I didn’t agree with everything, the way I was being described and the things that were said about me.”
“But I wanted to try to make it right, and so we made it right in the way that was asked at the time,” he added.
This is not the first time Casey Affleck has commented on the movement. He talked about it publicly in 2017 too, though he did not comment on his behavior back then.
