Lindsay Shookus, 38, had been supporting her now former boyfriend, Ben Affleck, 46, through his addiction for a long time, but she finally gave up.
The Saturday Night Live producer reportedly broke up with him so he ‘could hit rock bottom’ – and he has. Affleck checked into rehab this week. He was dropped off at a Malibu treatment center by his ex-wife, Jennifer Garner. This marks the third time he is seeking treatment for his alcohol addiction.
The news of the breakup between Ben Affleck and Lindsay Shookus broke out last week, when sources close to the couple suggested it was because they couldn’t manage a long-distance relationship. However, the latest report on the split suggests that it had another reason to it.
Shookus could no longer handle Affleck’s ‘addict behavior’.
A source close to the couple told PEOPLE, “Lindsay had been supporting Ben’s sobriety and going to meetings with him. She had him in meditation and they were doing it together.”
“His recovery was something that was very important to both of them,” the source added.
Shookus did try to be there for Affleck through this period in his life, but since the actor was unwilling to help himself, his girlfriend did not have the agency to help him, either.
38-year-old Lindsay decided it was better to leave Ben to his own devices, so he could pave a way out on his own terms.
“It was very hard for her to break up with Ben, but she knew he wasn’t getting better and that it was time for her to step aside,” said the source.
“She was trying to stay as close to him as possible so that he would stay on the right path, but ultimately it just wasn’t possible. She knew she had to let him hit bottom.”
Affleck has been struggling with addiction since 2001, when his dear friend, Charlie Sheen, drove him to a rehab. The Justice League star lives in L.A near the home of his ex, Jennifer Garner, and their children, Violet, 12, Seraphina, 10, and Samuel, 6.
