Adele and her husband Simon Konecki file for divorce three years after tying the knot and eight years after initially getting together.
The singer’s representatives told Associated Press the news on Friday evening. The couple has a 6-year-old son Angelo James together, who Adele gave birth to in 2012. The two plan to co-parent their son together. Konecki also has a daughter from a previous marriage.
The statement said, “They are committed to raising their son together lovingly. As always, they ask for privacy. There will be no further comment.” The couple is rumored to have gotten married in 2017, although they never officially confirmed anything.
The couple has been extremely private in their relationship, save for a moment in 2016 when Konecki sent the Hello singer love messages during her Adele Live. During her concert, fans noticed pink strips falling from the ceiling with handwritten notes saying, “I love you,” “Love you long time” and “You are an angel.”
The couple was celebrating their fifth anniversary at the time. Adele announced the night before that she wanted to have another child with Konecki, saying, “My womb is starting to ache a little bit. It’s like, ‘Baby, baby, baby. Need a baby, need a baby. I’m not pregnant. I won’t get pregnant until the end of the tour.”
While talking to Vanity Fair, Adele said, “I had really bad postpartum depression after I had my son and it frightened me.” She said the pregnancy experience had actually made her afraid of getting pregnant again. Since then, things seem to have deteriorated for the couple. She recently headed into a recording studio in New York City without her wedding ring.
Neither Adele nor Konecki have publicly spoken out about the issue.
