Nicole Kidman, star of Big Little Lies, and one of Hollywood’s most celebrated actresses, has been in the industry for around 35 years. During this time, she has undergone a remarkable transformation, both in the way that she looks and her big screen performances.
Kidman was born in 1967 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Her father, Antony Kidman, was a biochemist and clinical psychologist while her mother, Janelle Ann, is a nursing instructor who also edited her husbands books.
Her parents visited Hawaii on a student visa, when her father got enrolled in the University of Hawaii as a graduate student.
Kidman always had a natural talent for acting and performing. According to the star, she was first inspired to act when she saw Margaret Hamilton’s performance as the Wicked Witch of the West in Wizard of Oz.
She began her career with Bush Christmas in 1983, and gained international recognition in 1995 when she played Dr. Chase Meridian opposite Val Kilmer in Batman Forever.
She also played Suzanne Stone in To Die For in the same year, for which she won a Golden Globe.
In 1989, Kidman met Tom Cruise while filming Days of Thunder. In 1990, the duo got married and adopted a daughter, Isabella Jane, and a son, Connor Anthony, together. However, the couple split up in February 2001, and announced their separation followed by a quick divorce. They cited irreconcilable differences as the reason.
In 1999, Kidman starred alongside then-husband Tom Cruise in Eyes Wide Shut. Shortly after their divorce, Kidman took a hiatus from acting and her public life. She returned to win a Golden Globe for her performance in the musical Moulin Rouge.
In 2002, Kidman received further critical acclaim for her portrayal of Virgina Woolf in The Hours, a role which demanded that she wear prosthetics to change the shape of her nose, making her almost unrecognizable. This role earned her another Golden Globe and her first Academy Award.
Since then, Kidman has appeared in many critically acclaimed roles in projects such as Cold Mountain (2003), The Interpreter (2005), and the documentary Fur (2006).
Kidman met musician Keith Urban in 2005, at an event honoring Australians. The duo married each other, the very next year.
They had their first daughter in 2008, and two years later, their second daughter was born via surrogate.
In 2017, Kidman appeared in HBO’s Big Little Lies, a seven-part series that she produced, alongside Reese Witherspoon and Jean-Marc Vallee. She has won an Emmy for both her acting and her production along with a Golden Globe and a SAG Award for her role.
Over the course of her career, Kidman has done it all: television, movies and musicals. To adapt to these roles, she has also transformed physically.
From super curly hair to long sleek locks, from bare-faced to heavy prosthetics, Kidman’s variety of roles and natural aptitude for adapting to a range of looks has made the star be known for her versatility over the years.
Recently, she was seen looking unrecognizable with dusty blonde hair and considerable aging prosthetics on the set of her new movie Goldfinch, set to release in 2019.
