Intellectual property laws have become increasingly important in the high-tech world we live in today. With the increasing influence of the internet and social media, artists need to protect ownership of their creative work.
Currently, an artist is claiming infringement of his artistic work and the culprit, in this case, is popular singer and songwriter, Katy Perry!
Katy Perry released her new single, ‘Chained To The Rhythm’, as the lead single from the new album, Witness. This is Perry’s fifth studio album. While the music is great, the song has attracted some controversy.
Dom Sebastian, a London-based artist, has accused Katy Perry of illegally using his artistic creations! He took to his Instagram and posted a picture which displays his creation next to the art used for the cover of Perry’s song.
Dom claims that Perry and her label, Capitol Records, have used his artwork for the cover and merchandise of her single.
He captioned the photo: “@katyperry has stolen my artwork (this piece is from 2012) and use it on her single cover- I was never contacted by her or anyone from her team or label @capitolrecords. What’s more is that Katy has been selling my artwork as her own, as merchandise on her store, and through other outlets, as a $ 35 print.”
He further added, “I’m shocked that @katyperry and @capitolrecords think it is acceptable to lift my work directly from my website and use it as they please without paying me or even contacting me.”
It has to be acknowledged that the images do look deceptively similar to each other.
Dom further pointed out how Katy Perry and her record label are charging $35 for the merchandise when he wasn’t even paid a single penny.
Since Dom posted the photo, it has gone viral, with many people commenting on the controversy.
There were many Instagrammers who came to Dom’s support.
One follower commented, “That’s despicable! I hope you can be compensated (at the very least) & I’m so sorry to hear your work was stolen.”
Another follower commented, “Omg!! Hope you get your credit and money!”
A third stated, “So unfair! You deserve to be PAID @capitolrecords sue them.”
Katy Perry has had a very tough 2017. The singer broke up with her boyfriend, Orlando Bloom, in March 2017, only ten months after their time together. Katy was also banned from China and couldn’t appear for the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. And, now Katy is being accused of stealing art!
Seems like Katy Perry and her record label have some serious explaining to do! So far, there has been no comment from Katy or her record company.
