English Actor and host, James Corden, is being slammed online because of his so-called humorous take at the Weinstein-Rape controversy.
Corden, 39, hosted the amFAR Gala in Los Angeles on 13th of October. He made quite a few jokes about the entire Harvey Weinstein rape episode. His jokes were received mostly with groans and a few claps here and there. But the social media and other celebrities are just not having it.
Harvey Weinstein, an American film producer, has lately been accused of rape and molestation. Rose McGowan, the ‘Scream star’ was the first one to sue Harvey in 1997 after she was assaulted. Until now, more than 35 women have come out claiming that they’ve been sexually assaulted. Many of these women have now said that they have been raped.
Corden who is also a dear friend of Weinstein, started off the gala night with a joke that might’ve been funny in the initial stages of the controversy.
He gagged: “It’s a beautiful night here in L.A. — so beautiful, Harvey Weinstein has already asked tonight up to his hotel to give him a massage.”
This joke relates to the controversy as some women said that Harvey used to make them watch him shower or massage him.
The audience started groaning right after the joke leaving Corden defensive. The ‘Late Late Show’ host then started urging the unhappy audience to ‘probably leave now’ if they got offended. Then James made a couple of more uncomfortable jokes.
“It has been weird this week though, watching Harvey Weinstein in hot water. Ask any of the women who watched him take a bath,” he said for which he received more groans.
Corden then went on to joke about claims made by Lauren Sivan, a TV anchor. She said that Weinstein ‘masturbated in front of her and ejaculated into a potted plant’.
“Harvey Weinstein wanted to come tonight, but he’ll settle for whatever potted plant is closest”. For this he received more groans, to which he replied by saying, “Oh C’mon”.
Two of Weinstein’s accusers, Asia Argento and Rose McGowan, who have both come forward to accuse Weinstein of rape, took to Twitter to voice their utter disgust with what they saw.
Rose McGowan, who began her career starring in a Weinstein movie ‘Scream’ was not at all amused by Corden’s jokes. She was one the first victims of the producer’s harassment. She blasted James on Twitter, calling him a ‘Mother******* Piglet’.
“Hearing the audience’s vile roars & laughs show EXACTLY what kind of HOLLYWOOD you really are,” she wrote, before saying that the late-night host is close friends with Weinstein and called him a “vile little worm,” among other, more crass insults.
The negative backlash forced James Corden to come forward and issue an apology on Twitter.
“To be clear, sexual assault is no laughing matter. I was not trying to make light of Harvey’s inexcusable behavior, but to shame him, the abuser, not his victims. I am truly sorry for anyone offended, that was never my intention,” Corden tweeted.
